Favourite ____ of 2008

And another year has come and gone. I think it’s time we look back at our favourite games of 2008. I’ll start off my list first, I know I’m probably missing quite a few games from the DS list, that or it was a rather average year (compared to 2007, I could rattle off many titles that I love) and most of the games I played were quite forgettable. And I’ve only owned my Wii for a couple of months so I’ve still got quite a bit of catching up to do with some of the older titles ahem No More Heroes being one.

So here’s Michael’s favourite games of 2008.

Favourite Wii game(s):

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Best get together have a few drinks and waste the night game. Brawl nights were long and fun. It be just one more game, one more round and before we knew it the sun had already come up. We were all casual players as well, nobody knew advanced techniques and or long combo strings, all we did was yell furiously at each other as we mash buttons trying to get away from the golden hammer wielding Olimar. Damn you Olimar, you look ever so harmless but you always end up winning the match. *fist shake*

  • de Blob
Fantastic little third party game based off a neat little freeware game and developed right here in Melbourne, Australia. Who knew free roaming levels, jumping off buildings and splattering them with shades of colour could be this much fun? I’m still going through my first run, I only started playing this last week. I’ve got a lot to get through and I still need to get some friends over for a spot of multiplay, hopefully sometime next week when I unlock some more stuff. I urge anyone who hasn’t got their hands on this game to go out and get (or at least borrow/rent) it now.
  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes
The Wii isn’t really the console for 2D fighting games is it? I mean the wiimote + nunchuck option isn’t all that appealing. Luckily Capcom decided that this game should be a Wii exclusive. Sure you can go the wiimote + nunchuck route but what fighting fan would want to play with auto-combos and oversimplified button specials and supers? However hook up a classic or a GC controller and you’ve got it the way Capcom intended it to be played. One of the easiest crossover fighters to get stuck in to that or I’ve played too many Japanese doujin fighting games … but I digress, a simple four button layout, three attacks (light, medium and heavy) and one partner button for assists and tag outs. Insane over the top combos, flashy supers and old school anime characters beating down Capcom ones. Sadly due to licensing issues this won’t see the light of day outside of Japan so you’re going to have to go with the freeloader disc or home brew region free channel route if you want to play this.

Favourite WiiWare game(s)

  • World of Goo
I’m only a few levels in world two, blasted windmill. I’m terrible at physic related games but World of Goo has so much charm, it does get a bit frustrating but it’s frustratingly fun. I had a few friends over to play some co-op the other day, we managed to get through the levels quite easily which by myself would of taken numerous numerous tries. I think I’ll invite them over again so we can blast through a few more.
  • Tetris Party
It’s Tetris. What more do I need to say?

Favourite DS game(s)

  • Professor Layton and the Curious Village
I know there’s all these stellar role playing games that are topping everybody’s favourite DS game list but well I don’t like them, I just don’t like role playing games. Anyway Professor Layton and the Curious Village, such a charming game, lovely presentation, gorgeous animated cut scenes, neat voice acting and devilish puzzles. I’d be racking my brains out on the train ride to class trying to figure out some blasted numbers puzzle only to realize after fifteen minutes of frustration that I was over thinking it and the answer was right in front of me all along. I really hope we don’t have to wait too long for the two sequels to be translated.
  • Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
I know, new Ace Attorney game without our beloved Phoenix and the rest of the crew that we got to know and love! What were Capcom thinking? These new characters couldn’t be possible as good as the old ones? Well was I wrong. Trucy is now my favourite Ace Attorney character (quite obvious with the avatar I’m sporting), sorry Franziska. A few new elements but overall plays like the other games, you know point and click adventure games aren’t really my thing but the cast of characters and the story that’s what really drew me in here.

Joining the (AC) fun!

Let’s Go to the City (why did we get it renamed from City Folk?) finally hit retail shelves yesterday here in Australia.

Well I’ve got my copy. Do you? Well Cat does, but how about the rest of you?

Caught two string fishes on my first day, I don’t remember catching them being this easy in Wild World?

As you can see I spent my first days hard earnings on a tuxedo and a masquerade mask from Gracie Graces. I could of been working off my mortgage, tiny house is tiny!

And speaking of Animal Crossing. Nintendo of Australia, oh what a cock up they’ve done. It seems that there is no Australian version of Animal Crossing Wild World! Instead we just got a repackaged American version, thus now we have incompatibility issues! I wasn’t planning on using my Wild World character (not like I can now) but I was going to transfer him and use him as a secondary, have him (Wild World character) buy some rare items from his catalog for my Let’s Go to the City/City Folk character.

Proposed Australian Nintendo store location

Just a follow up to Guess who’s getting the new Nintendo store? entry.

As I mentioned in the first entry about the upcoming Australian Nintendo store is that my university happens to be only a brisk walk away from the proposed location. I decided to take a quick snap (see above thumbnail). That’s the future site for Australia’s own Nintendo store, well the second floor where that Wii Fit advertisement is.

Guess who’s getting the new Nintendo store?

Melbourne, Australia.

Wait, what? I live in Melbourne!

Going to be located on Swanston Street, wait that’s like a two minute walk from my university campus!

According to these two links (1 and 2), the next Nintendo store will be opening in Melbourne, above an EB Games.

Now I’ve been to said EB Games, it’s quite a new store actually, only recently opened, I had wondered what they had planned for the second floor. Thing is I wonder if this is going to be some joint venture with EB Games? I mean to get to the second floor the staircase is smack bang right in the middle of the EB Games store itself. If not they’ll both be vying for (Nintendo) customers, direct competition well how much more direct can you possibly get?!

I doubt it’ll be anywhere as awesome as the New York City one (I’m making the assumption that one is fantastic) but it’s nice to know Nintendo of Australia cares. Well I guess I know where I’ll be heading to in my breaks between classes.

mike’s wii game haul

I just recently bought a Wii, so I’ve been building up my Wii game library and this is my recent game haul. Oh yes I’m feeling poor, just a bit … no, my wallet is hurting.

Boom Blox is surprisingly fun especially multiplayer wise. I really like the Jenga-esque puzzles, not caring for the shooting gallery ones though. I need to get around to fiddling with the Create mode and make myself some Rube Goldberg machines.

Oh Mario Kart Wii has been frustrating, red shell, POW block, blue shell bang from first to last spot. But it’s been fun none the less. I three starred everything in the DS one (I still have nightmares doing a perfect DK Pass run without hitting the walls) but I don’t think I can be bothered with this one though, I don’t think I have the patience to aim for a perfect run. Just trying for one star it here. Working through 150CC at the moment.

I love the Wario Land games, the original Gameboy one would still be my all time favourite, so naturally I needed to get myself a copy of Wario Land The Shake Dimension. My goodness does it look absolutely gorgeous, shame it doesn’t really utilize wide screen. I’m on world three at the moment, just blitzing the levels which has been very easy, the main challenge is getting all the treasures and doing all the quests/mission, which I’ll come back to on my revisits. I’ve one hundred percented the other Wario Land games so I’m aiming to do that with The Shake Dimension.

Lego Batman I haven’t touched yet, that I just picked up yesterday, missed out on the key chain promotion though. I know it’s more of the same, but I love Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, to me this is a winning formula. Planning on getting a few friends over soon for a night of Lego Batman-ing because really the Traveller’s Tales Lego games are best played in co-op mode.
